Welcome !

Welcome to the Columbia Macular Degeneration Genetic Study.  This website provides several details regarding this study.  A major goal of this work is to better characterize specific risk factors for macular degeneration.  As these risk factors are identified, more specific preventative and treatment therapies can be developed for patients with macular degeneration.  This work is especially important for future generations of current patients with macular degeneration.

The study will include thousands of  patients with macular degeneration as well as a control group of individuals 70 years of age or older without macular degeneration-related vision loss. Study participants, referred by ophthalmologists, retina specialists, and eye care centers will be evaluated for the presence of macular degeneration.  Participation is possible during a one time visit: you will also be asked to complete a simple medical history and lifestyle questionnaire, undergo noninvasive photography of the retina, and provide a small tube of blood for Dr. Allikmets's DNA research. The information you entered into the web is completely confidential and is protected by the Columbia security system.  The study has been approved by the Columbia University Institutional Review Board and is supported in part by the National Eye Institute.

If you have more questions and recommdations about the study, please contact our coordinators or see our contact us page to get more information.
